Children with High Anxiety

Have you ever watched children as they enter a new situation or group of kids they don't know well? Some kids jump right in, others follow, but there just might be one that hesitates. Following some looks back at Mom and Dad, lip biting, and other "nervous" behaviors, the child finally gets going. Of course, once engaged, the child is having a blast. But, what's going on? Is the child just shy or introverted? Is it anxiety? Clearly, as she leads some of the other children in play, her actions are not so simply diagnosed. The cause of the initial "freeze", shyness, Some would say Anxiety, but I think a better term is Diffidence. Here are the compared definitions: Anxiety: Apprehension, uncertainty, and fear from the anticipation of an event or situation. Diffidence: self-distrust, fear of censure, failure, and a hesitation. Although anxiety is a more clinical term, I think Diffidence is a better choice to describe the situation mentioned at the outset of this article. Parents must dig into the fears and doubts of a young child, and work to build up confidence and a true view of themselves.(reality based truth).
